I went to a bilingual school which was about 60% Latino and about 40% white, which I really liked. As I got older, I started to notice things like the Latino students were unprepared for high school. What I’ve come to realize is that the bilingual education system was very different for different people based on their skin color. White kids gained a greater appreciation for other cultures. The Latino kids in my class were being held back because certain classes were taught in Spanish. For example, teaching geography in Spanish meant that the Latino kids weren’t prepared when they had to take geography in English. We took math classes in Spanish but I saw a lot of my friends drop out of high school because they weren’t fully prepared. I would like to see more bilingual education because of the cultural aspects. In fact, I think they need to be strengthened in the United States and given more funding. I would also like to see more accountability on the part of those teaching the Latino students.
