To the attention of Mark Udall

Mark, I hope someone notices this and brings it to your attention.

33 years ago your father was instrumental in starting the L5 Society. We had to start it to acknowledge a letter he wrote supporting space colonies/solar power satellites.

With the recent run up in energy prices, particularly oil, it may be time to look at power satellites again.

Recent conceptual advances make a case for power sats producing energy down in the penny a kWh range. That energy can be converted to synthetic gasoline for around a dollar a gallon.

Unfortunately it's not possible to start small, the scope of this project is in the same range as the Iraq war.

From the political viewpoint, a promise to work on a project that the engineers say will get gasoline back to a dollar a gallon might be a popular project. Done as a crash program it might be in full production (400-500 GW of new power every year) in as little as 7 years.

More if this is of interest.
Hello

Though I'd not been active in politics until 2000 when George Bush's campaign worried me, and I became active in the Democratic Party. Since then, I've worked to elect Democrats in Arizona and in Colorado and feel that we are making a difference. Here in Denver, we will be increasing our turnout and will materially help Mark take back this Senate seat.

I met Mark during the State Convention in Colorado Springs and was deeply impressed by his values and his sense of giving back to the community and resolved to work more diligently to assure his election.

The Udall conference call was very helpful, particularly the comments about his FISA and Iraq war funding votes.

Join a Group

One of the most powerful features of our new web site is Groups.

Groups let you stay in touch with people in your area, and organize supporters of Mark around specific issues, geographic areas, or shared interests.

Find a group that interests you. If you don't find one, create one! Once you join or create a group, you'll be prompted to invite your friends to join you.

Here's what groups can do for you:

Stay in touch with the group's listserve

Post blog entries of interest to the group

Host events for your group, or attend events hosted by others

Post links to more information on the things that are important to you

For county groups, we have created a URL shortcut to make it easy to find. It's just the county name and the word county. For instance:

www.MarkUdall.com/ArchuletaCounty

www.MarkUdall.com/DouglasCounty

So join the conversation, and we'll see you in the Groups!

Defense Spending Is Killing Our Country

We are spending $700 billion a year on defense, plus another $ 2 to $3 billion a week on the war in Iraq. (By the way, as I understand it, spending on Halliburton, Blackwater, etc., is part of the State Department budget and is not included in these figures.) The cost of oil keeps increasing even though demand in the United States is decreasing--this is because the dollar continues to collapse.

What no one seems to want to talk about is that these two facts are linked. If we withdraw from Iraq, decrease defense spending and put Rand Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Boeing et al. to work on conservation and alternative fuel technologies in conjunction with GM, Ford, Chrysler, using these funds together with tax rebates to ordinary citizens to afford these new technologies couldn't we make giant strides in resolving our dependency on oil and at the same time reduce global warming? Wouldn't we strengthen our weakened dollar?

What am I missing?

Mark Udall is wrong on FISA

Please listen to Senators Feingold and Dodd and help Mark Udall realize he made a mistake. Even Tom Udall voted against the bill!
Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) released the following statement today in response to the announcement that the Senate this week will consider the compromise legislation that would reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) this week.

“This is a deeply flawed bill, which does nothing more than offer retroactive immunity by another name. We strongly urge our colleagues to reject this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation and oppose any efforts to consider this bill in its current form. We will oppose efforts to end debate on this bill as long as it provides retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that may have participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program, and as long as it fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans.

“If the Senate does proceed to this legislation, our immediate response will be to offer an amendment that strips the retroactive immunity provision out of the bill. We hope our colleagues will join us in supporting Americans’ civil liberties by opposing retroactive immunity and rejecting this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation.”

While I look forward to seeing Mark Udall in the Senate I am completely disappointed knowing he caved to the Bush Administration.

I just created a new group, Renewable Energy Enthusiasts for Mark Udall--or REEMU, as I like to call it. I need members!

Saturday Jesper and I made a little movie about why I support Udall and what I do on the website. Maybe I can win over some undecided voters with my dorky charm. I'll definitely post the link when the video's up.
Shall we be frank to ourselves about our needs for national security? Terror should be a four letter word. The people who speak of it act as though it is a tangible asset that can be measured. What is a terrorist but someone who brings terror to other people? And who is bringing the terror to us today? I am more terrified of our government leaders than any real threat facing us today.

I can See for Miles and Miles

June 18

There is so much news on the transportation front these days. How will the state fund the transportation needs for today and tomorrow? That remains to be seen. There are bridges to maintain, highways to keep up, streets to be left in order, sidewalks for pedestrians, bike paths, and even the mass transit lines that do not use the streets. In addition to maintaining our current infrastructure, we have the future to plan for as well. To add further insult to the system, prices of fuel have remained in the steady $4 a gaillon range or close to it.

We cannot rob Peter (eg: education) to pay Paul (eg: transportation). And no matter how we fund our current and future transportation needs, we need to ensure that our citizens can afford to use it. This means a comprehensive plan that ensures not only there are roads and sidewalks and transit lines, but that they can be used by ALL citizens because they are affordable to ALL of our social classes.

The H2O Auto is not the car of the future. For clear reasons, we cannot yet run our cars on water. But imagine how handy for a car to run on something besides petrol. Where is the government that is interested in making our planes trains and automobiles available for the citizens at the prices we can afford? Surely every now and then our Representatives and Senators can join hands and do what's right for the citizens, not the corporations and executives.

Stick out your Tongue and say 'WTF?"

June 16:

I have spent the day in the hospital. Not because I was in need of medical attention (phew). No, my mum was taken suddenly by an emergency and needed immediate and urgent care. THIS VISIT REMINDED ME HOW OUR SYSTEM IS NOT HOW HEALTH CARE SHOULD BE. I'm not talking about the metal detectors or the 39 people it felt like i had to work through to get to my mum's bedside. What i am talking about is the treatment received and why.

When i got there, she was away on testing. I wasn't told what was going on or where she was or what was even wrong. Even after the doctor arrived, i was told nothing. We were left waiting for hours on end. And perhaps the greatest injustice of all, the person i got to know best was with BILLING. Yes, the only person concerned with my mum was the one who wanted to know how she would pay.

Shocked that Udall voted for warrantless wiretapping

I'm shocked that Mark has voted for warrentless wiretapping. I thought the Democrats were going to give us some change but this is the same ol', same ol'. Mark voted a bill on yesterday 6/20 that allows warrantless wiretapping and gives immunity to telecoms for doing what they knew was illegal. TERRIBLE. Now it goes to the Senate and is will likely pass.

There hasnt been one case of warrantless wiretapping stopping terrorists, while there have been many cases of abuse of power -- the ruthless harassement of MLK, Jr; Tricky Dick's attempt to steal opponent's campaign information; spying on union organizers leading their physical abuse. Allowing the telecoms immunity shows us that there is one law for the rich, another for the commoners.

I had phone and emailed Mark to let him know my opinion on this. I looked at his House website survey - 64% of his people agree with me. Mark -- this was a sell-out! How can I work hard to help you win the Senate if there is no change in this police state policy!?!?!

Retroactive immunity for Telecoms

Today, Mark Udall voted with many other complicit Democrats and voted to give retroactive immunity to telecom companies that likely participated in illegal wiretaps for the Bush administration. To paraphrase Jonathan Turley, this is like robbing a bank, then changing the law to make bank robbing legal.

This also shields members of the Bush administration AND complicit congress people from both sides of the isle from further investigation into illegal wiretapping.

And you want to be my Senator? How many telecom bucks do have in your wallet???

The whole Udall for Colorado crew took part in the Juneteenth Parade in Denver's historic Five Points Neighborhood on Saturday.

The crowd was great, the weather was gorgeous, and the food was fantastic. Here are a few of the photos we took along the route and at the festival:
Udall-Schaffer Debates

My job involves an almost daily commute between Montrose and Grand Junction. I manage radiation oncology clinics in both communities. This combines two concerns, of course, healthcare and fuel prices. I heard on the radio, POTUS 08, of the possibility of a series of debates between Udall and Schaffer. The pros and cons of this. From my perspective as a Udall point guy in Montrose county, these debates would be helpful in creating publicity and energy for Udall. A few debates could, and probably would, take place in western Colorado. Think of the letters to the editor that could be based on these debates. No doubt Udall would come out better than Schaffer during the debates themselves. These debates would be an opportunity for the Udall campaign to project into western Colorado. People here are eager for new ideas. Western Colorado is experiencing growth, due to energy production. However, this is growth with undercurrents of economic uncertainty, ironically the cost of fuel not the least source of this. Schaffer seems to be running as a Green wannabe--little Prius cars zipping around on his tv commercials. Here Udall has the chance to disclose authentic and honest credentials--a quality that goes over big here.
