FULL TEXT: PETITION TO SUPPORT THE 21ST CENTURY G.I. BILL:

I support the “21st Century G.I. Bill” to fulfill an enduring promise to America’s most veterans: “If you serve your country, we’ll prepare you for civilian life and cover your college expenses when you return home.”  When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G.I. Bill of Rights in 1944, it gave millions of World War II veterans funding for college tuition, textbooks, and a monthly stipend.  But today, many returning veterans find that their G.I. Bill benefits cover just a fraction of their college expenses.

We can’t possibly repay veterans for their service to our country, but the least we can do is uphold the promise afforded by the G.I. Bill of Rights.  That’s why I support Senator Jim Webb’s “21st Century G.I. Bill” (S. 22), and its companion bill in House or Representatives (H.R. 2702). This legislation will enshrine the promise of the original G.I. Bill by providing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans up to 36 months of benefits – enough for four academic years – to cover tuition, books and fees, and a $1,000 per month stipend for living expenses.
